IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target and break down discoloration, redness, and visible sun damage at the skin’s surface. By delivering controlled pulses of light, IPL stimulates the skin’s natural renewal process, helping to reveal a more even, radiant complexion with little to no downtime.

How It Works

IPL targets excess melanin and blood vessels just below the surface of the skin. The light energy is absorbed by pigmented spots and vessels, converting to heat and gradually breaking them down into smaller particles, so they can be naturally processed and eliminated by the body. The fragmented melanin rises to the surface and flakes away in the days following treatment, while collapsed vessels are gradually reabsorbed by the body, leaving the skin clearer, more even-toned, and visibly refreshed. It’s a gentle yet effective way to treat discoloration caused by sun exposure, aging, or general skin sensitivity.

1

Consultation

Your experience begins with a one-on-one consultation to assess your skin, review your goals, and determine if IPL is the right fit. This treatment is especially effective for those experiencing redness, sun damage, or dullness. Your provider will create a plan tailored to your unique skin type, tone, and lifestyle. Book your complimentary consultation here.

2

Treatment

During your appointment, your provider will use a handheld IPL device to deliver quick pulses of light to targeted areas. Most sessions take around 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. You may feel a light snapping or warming sensation, but numbing is typically not required. Post-treatment, the skin may appear pink and some brown spots may temporarily darken before fading.

3

Results

Initial improvements often appear within 1-2 weeks, with brighter, more even skin continuing to develop over a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart.

4

Maintenance

To maintain your results, most clients return for IPL treatments every 6 to 12 months, depending on their skin goals and how much sun exposure they receive. Some may benefit from seasonal touch-ups, especially after summer months when pigmentation tends to resurface. Your provider will help determine the ideal cadence for your skin type, lifestyle, and long-term plan. Regular use of SPF and high-quality skincare can help prolong your results between sessions.

Your Questions, Answered

  • What kind of skin concerns can IPL help with?

IPL is often used to treat sunspots, age spots, redness, rosacea, and broken capillaries. It’s also popular for generally brightening skin tone and improving clarity across the face, neck, chest, and hands.

  • Who is IPL best for?

IPL works best on lighter skin tones with visible signs of sun damage, redness, or pigmentation, helping reduce freckles, age spots, and rosacea. It may not be suitable for deeper skin tones, due to an increased risk of pigmentation changes after the treatment.

  • How does IPL differ from other laser treatments?

Unlike lasers that use a single, focused wavelength of light, IPL uses broad-spectrum light to target multiple skin concerns at once. It’s generally considered gentler and best suited for surface-level pigment and redness.

  • What does IPL feel like?

You may feel a quick snap or warm pulse with each flash of light. Most clients find the treatment tolerable without numbing, though it can be applied for added comfort if needed.

  • What is the downtime?

Downtime is typically minimal. Skin may appear slightly pink or flushed for a few hours, and treated pigmentation may temporarily darken before flaking off over the next 7-10 days. You’ll be advised to avoid direct sun exposure and follow gentle aftercare during this period.

  • Can I get IPL while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Out of caution, IPL treatments are not performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

  • How can I prepare for my treatment and what should I expect after?
